Why it's called Avenue

An avenue is defined by order, structure, and parallel paths — a place where many things happen at once without chaos.

This home is designed the same way.

The Avenue provides clearly defined spaces for work, family life, rest, and gathering, all connected through a traditional, thoughtful layout. Instead of everything overlapping, each part of life has a place — allowing the home to feel calm, organized, and dependable even during full seasons.

For families who value structure and long-term livability, Avenue is the right home.

Who this Plan is Best for...

The Avenue works especially well for families who:

  • Have multiple children at different life stages

  • Have one or two adults working from home, especially client-facing

  • Value privacy in bedrooms and quiet sleeping spaces

  • Appreciate traditional Craftsman character

  • Need flexibility for guests or multigenerational living

  • Spend a lot of time at home and need it to function well

This plan is especially relieving for families who need clear separation between roles — work, rest, and togetherness.

Who this Plan is not Ideal for...

The Avenue may not be the right fit if you:

  • Want everything on one level with no stairs

  • Prefer a very modern or minimalist aesthetic

  • Want strong visual connection to the street from main living spaces

  • Are looking for a small or highly contained footprint

This home is intentionally structured and on the larger side.

How Daily Life Flows

Mornings

Mornings begin quietly. Coffee is made in the kitchen while natural light fills the back of the house. Kids gather at the island, backpacks and shoes are collected from the mudroom command center, and everyone moves easily out through the attached garage.

Workdays

The large front office creates true work-from-home separation. Clients can enter and exit through the front door without passing through private living spaces. At the end of the day, the office door closes — and work stays there.

Evenings

With multiple living spaces, the family can gather together or spread out as needed. Kids play or watch TV upstairs while the main floor stays calm and grounded. The primary suite is fully tucked away, offering quiet and privacy whenever it’s needed.

This home supports weekday life, not just hosting or special occasions.

Kitchen, Dining, and Main living Spaces

The kitchen sits at the back of the house, filled with natural light and connected to the backyard.

Key features include:
  • A large island for cooking, homework, and conversation
  • A separate bar area outside the main cooking zone for easy hosting
  • A generous walk-in pantry or scullery that fully contains mess
  • Open connection to dining and living spaces, visually softened by exposed beams

The result is a home that feels open, but never loud or overwhelming.

Laundry, Storage & Invisible Function

  • A large main-floor laundry room connected to both the mudroom and primary closet
  • Drop zone and family command center immediately inside the garage entry
  • Walk-in pantry for appliances and bulk storage
  • A powder bath near the front door and mudroom for quick, discreet access

These systems quietly support daily life so the home can stay calm and orderly.

Private Spaces & Zoning

  • Primary suite on the main level, oriented at the back of the house for maximum privacy
  • Secondary bedrooms upstairs, separated by a bathroom
  • A second-floor bonus room or playroom that helps contain noise
  • A flexible guest suite that can function as a junior primary or private retreat

This zoning allows the home to grow with the family — from early bedtimes to late nights.

Outdoor Living

  • A large covered front porch creates a welcoming, neighborhood-facing presence
  • A covered back porch supports outdoor dinners and everyday backyard life
  • Easy visual and physical connection to watch kids play outside

Outdoor spaces extend the living areas naturally — without requiring constant setup or upkeep.

Natural Light & Overall Feel

Natural light flows through all main living and sleeping spaces, with balanced windows on multiple sides of the core living areas.

The overall feeling of the Avenue is:
  • Grounded
  • Traditional
  • Private
  • Warm
  • Structured, without feeling closed off

This is a house with presence — and restraint.

Builder & Modification Notes

  • This plan has a lot of custom details and cabinetry, so a skilled builder will be crucial for all the traditional details
  • Well-suited to suburban and rural lots

Modifications are best kept light and intentional to preserve the plan’s intentional privacy and flow.

From the Architect

I tend to recommend the Avenue to families who spend a lot of time at home and need clearly defined spaces for different parts of life.

If you work from home — especially in a client-facing role — this plan really shines. It allows you to fully separate work and family life while still staying connected to the heart of the home.

The design was inspired by my childhood home — a 20th-century Craftsman on 4th Avenue. I reworked the layout to support modern family rhythms without losing the character and structure that made that home feel so grounding to grow up in.

The Avenue is flexible, steady, and built for the long term — whatever that may bring.
